Study Away Scholarships

Every year, Furman offers need-based scholarships to students participating in a Furman Faculty-Led (Semester or MayX/Summer), Affiliate and Exchange study away program. To qualify for a Study Away Scholarship, students must have a current FAFSA on file at Furman. Apply for a Furman Study Away Scholarship. Students may only recieve and use any scholarship funds one time.

Many affiliate and exchange programs offer additional scholarship opportunities, and we encourage Furman students to apply for those funding sources as well.

Financial Aid

Students may continue to apply merit scholarships or need-based financial aid (but not work-study awards) toward approved faculty-led, affiliate and exchange semester programs. Financial aid is calculated based on the full cost of attendance in the study abroad program and therefore may differ from the amount of aid for a semester on campus.

If students have a credit after their financial aid funds have been applied toward fees billed by Furman, those funds will be transferred to student accounts so that students may pay their program directly for meals, books, flights, and other non-academic fees. However, funds will not be available until after the Financial Aid Office receives official notice from the host institution that the student is enrolled and participating in their selected program. It typically takes 7-10 business days  after the start of the Furman semester for funds to transfer following notification of enrollment. Please speak with a financial aid office member if you have any questions pertaining to Financial Aid.

Short-term interest-free loans are available through Financial Aid, and external funding sources are also available to help with study away cost.

Please contact the Financial Aid Office for any questions regarding your application of your package or aid requirements towards study away.

External Funding Resources

There are a variety of external funding opportunities for which students may qualify. Please review a list of external resources to apply for funding and aid for additional financial support for a study away program. Some aid may be restricted by location, program, length or personal/academic background.
